The Senate is cranking out bad ideas faster than we can respond.

S.556 is a bill that would
empower a petitioning group of parents to take over a “failing” school.  You’d think the PTA would love a bill like that.  Nope.  PTA’s in Florida and Georgia were instrumental in defeating such bills recently.  Why?

They see it for what it is: a gateway for privatizing public schools, funded by education entrepreneurs and wealthy libertarians.  The game plan looks like this: for-profit companies pay to set up fake “grassroots” groups who coerce parents into signing petitions, often under false pretenses.

The parents sign, they “takeover” the school, and then need to go back to their day jobs.  Who runs the school now?

The for-profit companies that ran the campaignYou think I’m making this up.  I don’t blame you.  Have a link.  And another.

The SCEA is fighting this, and they’ve asked for our help.  Quick turnaround is needed to kill it in subcommittee.
